2012 Digital Learning Summit Report Out

ODLA Members with Eric Hileman and Dr. Janet Baresi ODLA was pleased to receive an invitation to attend the 2012 Digital Learning Summit held on April 19th and 20th this year at the Crowne Plaza in Oklahoma City.

Representing ODLA were: Elaine Johns, Scott Charlson, Steve Cade, Dr. Wes Fryer, Steve Ray, Larry Cochran, Tim Crisp, Barbara Crisp, Candace Shaw, and Berlin Fang.

Dr. Fryer created a wonderful synopsis that captures the excitement and challenge ahead of us.

2012 Spring Conference

Communications Committee Volunteers Needed

Do you have mad web skillz? Or are you a whiz at graphic design? ODLA could really use your help. We would love to get your ideas and help with managing this website as well as any advice or direction on social media campaigning. ODLA is on LinkedIn, Google+, Facebook (Page and Group), and would like to get involved with Twitter.

This site is built on the Adobe Business Catalyst service. We'd love to expand use of the CRM features and get somewhere with the email campaign functionality but we're all volunteers with day jobs that seem to get in the way of the fun stuff.

A Tribute to Bill Johnson

Bill JohnsonPlease join us in expressing our profound sorrow at the loss of a wonderful and giving person who touched Oklahoma and the Distance Learning community in so many ways. Leonard William "Bill" Johnson passed away on Wednesday, March 28th as a result of injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident from the previous weekend.

Bill was an ardent supporter of the Oklahoma Distance Learning Association from its inception. He participated in nearly every conference we held and moved mountains to ensure the demonstrations of technology would amaze the participants. His passion and vision for technology as a tool to bring people together and achieve understanding was without limit. 

As Chief of Operations at OneNet, Bill kept a videoconferencing system in his office and published the address far and wide. He had so many visitors from all over the world "drop by and visit" and was endlessly curious about who they were and what they were doing and what they wanted to do. From setting up the Eagle Cam at the Sutton Avian Center to working on how to improve the collection of data for the Mesonet, Bill was a constant, boundless, enthusiastic and infectious force of nature in pursuit of expanding the limits of technology.

We will truly miss you, President Emeritus Bill Johnson.

(Note that I’m not stuck on the number 10 or the strategies listed below… just an idea and a starting point.)

    • Learning in Context
    • Authentic Practice
    • Constructivism / Contructionism
    • Situated Cognition / Cognitive Apprenticeship
    • Creating Relevance
    • Synchronous / Asynchronous classes
    • Cross-curricular projects (PBL)
    • Task Level (I don’t remember the proper name for this… but the levels ranged from something like rote memorization to synthesis. I’ll look it up later, but just wanted to get something down to discuss at this point.)
    • Promoting Transfer
    • Collaboration / Cooperation (generally called cheating in K-12)
    • Learner Centered Classroom / Teacher Centered Classroom
    • Games / Simulations


Name that Strategy Game
(I’ve just started considering this…so it’s real weak. Maybe it has some possibilities.)

    • Short videos of various strategies being used in a classroom (with technology used to support the strategy use, of course).
    • Challenge would be to get videos and permissions to use!
    • Unless they could be found pre-made on YouTube or TeacherTube
    • Learner (viewer) challenge is to determine what learning strategy is being used.
    • I foresee something like a forum attached to each video where viewers can discuss, dispute, complain, …

I think this could be done as either a sync session or an async session / web resource.

ODLA Gets a New Secretary

Elaine Johns, President of ODLA has accepted the resignation of Roxanne Glenn as ODLA Secretary effective March 1, 2012. Roxanne has recently accepted additional duties as a D2L Administrator and is active in the planning of the campus cable television channel.

Roxanne was a great asset to us in organizing and conducting our conferences as well as doing the yeoman's task of organizing all of the minutes and votes for the board. We wish her the best of luck as she pursues these exciting new challenges! 

Kristi WheelerKristi Wheeler has agreed to fulfill the remaining term as ODLA Secretary.

Kristi is currently the interim manager for Engineering Distance Education at Oklahoma State University. She has been with Engineering Distance Education for 13 years working closely with the engineering departments to grow distance education, meeting today’s demand for non-traditional students as well as traditional students.

Her department houses three online graduate degree programs including Engineering and Technology Management, Industrial Engineering and Management, and Electrical and Computer Engineering. They also house one undergraduate completion degree program in Electrical Engineering Technology (with only the core courses being online) as well as offering many undergraduate courses, most being technology-related.

Krisiti's team offers between 85-100 online courses per semester to students located around the globe.

ODLA Board Creates Ad Hoc Telemedicine Committee

After a conversation between Elaine Johns and Sandra Butler with OUHSC about reviving telemedicine participation in ODLA the two agreed to a seek the creation of an ad hoc committee. 

Sandy suggested, “Nursing Colleges and Career Technology Centers are just getting going with online courses in Oklahoma so faculty are looking for information and support.” Sandy further agreed to chair the ad hoc committee and recruit partners for the committee. A key ingredient to the success of this effort will be the continuation of the Online Teacher Certification Program.

The Board of Directors agreed to the formation of the Telemedicine Ad Hoc Committee to function until the Membership Meeting held during the Fall Conference on November 9th, 2012.

Professional Development Committee Report

Meeting Date: January 24, 2012

Agenda:

Introductions

Current PD in ODLA

Debbie spoke about current PD occurring in ODLA. ODLA offers the Spring and Fall Conferences, which are considered professional development events, but do not fall under the scope of this committee. The Events committed and Executive Board usually cover the conferences.

The OTC Program (Online Teaching Certification Program) has just completed it’s first year. Debbie developed the concept a couple of years ago and it was implemented in 2011 with ODLA. There have been two cohorts that have now completed the program and there have been five colleges/universities involved with the program. The program is currently being retooled and new recruiting will need to take place soon. Debbie mentioned that there is quite a bit of administration/management that takes place with the program and expressed her need to delegate. Debbie mentioned having a separate meeting just for the OTC Program and Beth is interested in more information about it as well.

Future PD in ODLA

Podcast Series: This idea was brought up at the Fall 2010 Conference and we’d really like to implement it this year. The idea is to develop monthly themes and then ask for volunteers in ODLA to develop 3-5 minutes podcasts on the theme. We discussed the issue about whether to limit the podcasts to just ODLA membership (as an incentive to one of the perks you get for being a part of ODLA) versus developing a YouTube Channel and having it open to the public (or something similar). We see pros and cons to both and think it would be best decided by the Executive Board on what they would prefer. Bill mentioned including the Oklahoma Realtors market, whose number is 14,000+ of registered Realtors. He also mentioned including banking and restaurants markets too as far as PD is concerned. Bill will research more on tapping into this market.

Debbie mentioned beginning the podcast starting in March and developing the theme calendar through the end of the year. Beth mentioned having a theme on how technology can help with the transfer of learning as well as mobile technologies, making your content more interactive and free Web2.0 tools. We decided to start out with the following five themes and then discuss later about the other four:

  • July - Interactive Content

Other ideas: Beth mentioned having more networking events, such as Lunch & Learns, etc. They could take place in a few regional areas such as OKC, Tulsa, Lawton, Stillwater.

Conclusion

We will plan meeting towards the end of February. (We can try another technology tool besides BigMarker if you’d like).

Podcast Theme Planning: Need someone to develop Google Form to recruit for volunteers to create podcasts (work with Steve Cade on this too) Deadlines for podcasts should be the 15th of month prior to the theme. Need specs developed for those volunteers (.mov? .mp4? include transcripts for accessibility, 3-5 min long, etc, etc, instructions on where to store/FTP,) (??How professionally do we want to require them to produce this, do we want them to just create audio/video and we put in our own skin template?? Debbie votes to have them on an ODLA branded template, anyone else?) If agreed upon, need skin developed. Check your calendar for Week of Feb. 20-24 and what works best for you.
